Coffee Capsule Material Guide: PP, Aluminium or Compostable?

The material you choose shapes your cost, shelf-life, sustainability and brand positioning. Here is how PP, aluminium and compostable compare — and how to pick the right one for your coffee.

A closer look at each material

PP (polypropylene)

PP is a food-grade plastic and the most cost-effective capsule material — the default for price-sensitive, high-volume ranges. It comes in refillable press-bottom, fully-sealed base, and foil-sealed versions; the foil-sealed type protects aroma well, with freshness up to around two years.

Best for: brands prioritising cost and volume, private-label lines, and anyone testing a new range. See our Nespresso-compatible PP options (CM21P, CM11P, CM02).

Aluminium

Aluminium offers the highest oxygen and light barrier, protecting aroma and crema with freshness up to about two years. It also reads as premium and original-style on shelf — the material customers associate with specialty Nespresso-style capsules.

Best for: premium and specialty coffee, gifting and shelf-standout. See Aluminium coffee capsules (CZ03).

Compostable

Compostable capsules are made from bio-based PBS/PLA designed to break down under composting conditions, and can be certified to standards such as EN 13432. They are the natural fit for sustainability-led, organic and European brands.

Trade-offs to plan for: compostability rules differ by market (industrial vs home composting), and you should confirm the exact certification your market requires. See Compostable coffee capsules (CM21PB).

Material guide FAQ

Which coffee capsule material is cheapest?

PP (polypropylene) is the most cost-effective, which is why it is the default for high-volume and price-sensitive ranges.

Which material keeps coffee freshest?

Aluminium offers the best oxygen and light barrier, with freshness up to about two years. Foil-sealed PP also protects freshness well at a lower cost.

Which is the most sustainable capsule?

Compostable (bio-based PBS/PLA) is designed to break down under composting and can be certified (e.g. EN 13432). Recyclability of PP and aluminium depends on local facilities.

Can I use different materials for different products in my range?

Yes — many brands use PP for everyday lines, aluminium for premium, and compostable for an eco range. We can supply all three under your brand.

How do I decide without committing to a big order?

Through our capsule incubation service you send your coffee and we produce production-grade samples in your shortlisted materials, so you can compare before scaling.
