Compostable Nespresso Capsules Supplier: What to Check

Compostable capsules are one of the fastest-growing requests from coffee and tea brands — especially in Europe and among organic and sustainability-led labels. But “compostable” is a claim that regulators and retailers increasingly scrutinize. Here’s what to verify before you choose a supplier.

1. The material

Most compostable capsules use bio-based polymers like PLA and PBS. ONWIN’s compostable Nespresso capsule is a PBS/PLA bio-based cup with a PLA-and-paper bottom filter. Ask any supplier exactly which polymers they use, and whether the lid/film and filter are also compostable — a fully compostable capsule needs compostable sealing components too.

2. Certifications (the part you must not skip)

A credible compostable claim is backed by third-party certification, such as:
EN 13432 (industrial compostability, EU standard)
TÜV OK compost (HOME or INDUSTRIAL)
BPI (North America)

Ask for the certificate number and scope. Marketing the product as “compostable” without certification is a greenwashing risk in many markets. If certification is still in progress, say so accurately (e.g., “made from compostable materials; certification in progress”).

3. Freshness trade-offs

Bio-based materials can have different barrier properties than PP or aluminum. Good compostable capsules manage this with structure (e.g., a foil-seal base for freshness). Ask about shelf life and how it’s achieved, and weigh it against your distribution timeline. If maximum freshness is critical, compare with aluminum or high-barrier options.

4. Compatibility and quality

Confirm the capsule is reliably compatible with Nespresso OriginalLine machines and seals consistently with your chosen film. The only way to be sure is to test — see point 5.

5. Get samples and test

Before any bulk order, request samples and test compatibility, sealing and brew quality with your own coffee. If you’re developing the product, a pilot validates material, sealing and freshness together.

FAQ

Are your compostable capsules certified? Material is bio-based (PBS/PLA); ask us for the current certification status and scope before marketing claims.
Home or industrial compostable? Confirm which standard applies to your market — they’re different.
Do compostable capsules keep coffee fresh? With the right structure, yes — but verify shelf life for your supply chain.
